Texas leaders, don’t let the snowstorms be your excuse to give us a snow job on electricity reform
By Dave Lieber February 26, 2021
I’m thrilled that you’ve turned your attention to our broken, embarrassing, deceptive, failing electricity system. I wish it had happened a decade ago, but now is better than never. Too bad it took death and devastation to make it happen.
You owe us, and The Watchdog is here to collect. The time is now for you to take charge and end the silly game you’ve played for the past decade. You bragged that our electricity system is the gold standard for America.
Only, it’s not.
You ignored its overarching flaws, which have angered thousands of Texans. I know because they contact me to complain about you.
There’s another side of the coin I’d like you to look at. If “heads” of the coin is the generating and transmission portion that you’re investigating now, then “tails” is the retail electricity market you love so much that you refuse to tamper with it, even now.
The retail electricity system is a slimy, corrupt, deceptive marketplace because you have allowed it to become that by refusing to tighten the bolts on this busted system. Consumers are hurt, and, so far, you’ve refused to help.
I sat through 12 hours of your hearings Thursday and didn’t hear a single lawmaker mention the need for enhanced consumer protection. This subject is so far off your radar that it’s more likely the Cowboys will win the Super Bowl than it is that you will dip your toe in the water and fix the mess you’ve created by your negligence.
The only truly honest statement about the failures of our state enforcing laws and rules against electricity companies came from previous Public Utility Commission Chairman Donna Nelson. Five years ago, when talking about retail companies, she said, “Whatever practice we put in place to try and end the confusion, then they find a way around that.”
